The one vertical where Apple had not explored yet was gaming. At the recent iPhone 11 launch keynote, Apple gave out more details about the subscription service and now it’s finally here for everyone. The cost? US $4.99 / AU$7.99 / AED 19.99 / £4.99 / ₹99 a month. What do you get in return? Unlimited access to 100+ new games rolling out later this year to Apple’s ecosystem.
So, how do you get started?
Subscription like any other service
The Apple Arcade service is available on devices running the latest OS on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Macs – namely iOS 13, iPadOS 13, tvOS 13 and macOS Catalina. You will see an Arcade tab in any such device’s App Store, from where you need to begin. At the time of writing, Apple was offering all new users a sign-up trial offer for 30-days free.
The sign-up process is simply entering your Apple ID credentials here and remembering that you ought to cancel within the stipulated time, if you only want to try out the service. To cancel, navigate to Settings > [Your Name] > Subscriptions on your iPhone or iPad. Select Apple Arcade, then scroll down to the bottom and choose Cancel Subscription.
There is also the option to turn on Family Sharing for up to 6 members, for no additional cost. The service will come equipped with options like Screen Time and parental controls.
Game mode: ON
Once the sign-in process is completed, you will get to choose from a number of available games to download and play. The games are laid out in different categories like Action, Adventure, Family – to make it easier to browse. If you want to glance at all the available games, scroll down and tap See All Games.
Awesomeness: Apple has said that all games available on Apple Arcade will be available offline, so you can enjoy playing them while on-the-go
Each game has a description and screenshots – similar to the experience of browsing apps on the App Store. Once you find the game that interests you the most, tap Get and it will download on your Apple device. You will keep receiving updates for the game as long as you have an Apple Arcade subscription and Apple even said that these games will feature no ads nor any in-app purchases.
Controller support? Yes!
If you’re an avid gamer and wondering if Apple products will let you add your gaming controller to enjoy these games, then you’re in luck. There is a Controller Supported tag on games that will work with a controller with your iPhone, iPad, Apple TV or Mac. Apple has officially extended support to popular gaming controllers at launch: The Xbox One Wireless Controller and the DualShock 4 Wireless Controller for PlayStation 4.
Apple Arcade will also support any MFi controller.
Get your game on
Apple Arcade looks like an enjoyable product that will have something for everyone – pro gamers, amateurs and even family members to spend time together on mindless fun. Plus, lack of ads and in-app purchases makes the offering by Apple even more enticing than other gaming services.
So, why wait? Let’s play!
